Maldives players celebrate after the shoot out
Dhaka, BANGLADESH – Maldives grabbed bronze medal in football event of SA Games 2010 after beating India 3-1 on a penalty shoot-out after the game ended as a goalless draw. Maldives was the better side in most part of the game and hit the woodwork twice in the game.

India dominated the game early in the first half but then it was a one sided encounter with Maldives kept on pressuring the Indian side.

The game was delayed for more than half an hour when a high jump event was held on the field together with an awarding ceremony of an athletic event.

In the 21st minute Maldives created the first chance when Ashfaq passed the ball to Nafiu but his shot missed the target by not much.

In the 38th minute Adham picked a through ball from Ashfaq but executed a weak shot which came back into the game after deflected off Indian defenders and both Nafiu and Mukhthar tried to shot the ball but failed.

In the 52nd minute Adham shot from close range but keeper saved from near angle.

Best chance came in the next minute as Ashfaq beat three markers and made a shot from the edge of six yard box but went wide.

In the 58th minute Ashfaq fired a long range free kick and beat the keeper from far angle but not the post.

In the 74th minute defender Ibbe made a stunning header but hit the cross bar and both Ashfaq and Nashid failed to convert it from the rebounded ball.

There wasn’t any extra time and headed straight to the spot after the final whistle.

Shamveel missed Maldives first penalty but Ibbe, Adham and Umair scored while India managed to score one. They hit one wide, one over the cross bar and the other was saved by keeper Faisal.

This is the same score which India beat Maldives on penalties in the final of SAFF championship 2009.

gettin bronze is always sweeter than gettin silver, for many reasons! the smile on the players' faces proves this. its better to win the last game than losing it. coz losing in the final twice in two months... well, football crazy maldivians wouldnt b able to see that happen! but gettin defeated by a team like afghanistan in a semi is not very easy to digest either! life goes on....
