Maldives was given a tough time on the pitch by hosts Bangladesh
Dhaka, BANGLADESH – Maldives under 23 national team coach Urbanyi praised the performance and the effort put by the players in the match against Bangladesh today, which the Maldives side lost by a single goal.

“This was a good game. Good rhythm. It was two good young teams. Both sides had good chances. We missed two big chances early in the first half. Overall, I think it was a good performance from the team.”

“They tried to give play the way we discussed. Pressing throughout the game. Other side did the same so it was a good game. It was a surprise for some of the players because they do not face this type of rhythm in Dhivehi League. They need more of this. That’s the way they can develop the game”

Urbanyi was more than happy to share his joy over the performance of his second choice keeper.

“Athif is a talented goal keeper. He needs more international experience like this to have more confidence in the goal.  I chose Faisal because I feel he has more confidence especially on long balls. It is a good thing we have two good young talented goal keepers”

When asked about Easa’s (Messi) performance coach said that if he continues to do the same, he could be part of the national team in the future.

“Messi tried to put a much better effort today. He did a couple of good things today. If he can continue like this, he can be a good part of the game in the future”
Coach also said that Ashfaaq, Mukhthaar and Bonda were ready to play in the game, but he wanted to give chance to the young ones.

Meanwhile, Sports’ Physician Shakeeb said that Nazmeen would not be able to play in the next match and he has to be assessed further for the injury.

Maldives is a unique team. Playing a totally different football giving plenty of freedom to players in attack and quick organization in defense. This particular game against the overage Bangladesh team, the local tiny Maldivians has shown comfort on the ball with quick passing movements which always makes the opponents scare. Although Maldive lose 1: 0 this team has shown good potential and motivation from the players to win in their semi final match against Afganistan. I am sure all this has come from proper training and management. I salute Mr. Coach Urbanyi for his remarkable role in transforming a very defensive oriented team to a very attacking minded team. this i beleive is modern football. We need to build this tempo within our club system. Let the players be given more free role in games they play at at the same time coaching them to take responsibility. I pray AlMighty Allah for Maldives be the Champs of ths SAF Games Fotball.

I guess this is a start with a lot of room to improve. The inexperience was very obvious as the young team looked like fishes out of water. But there is good promise for the future with a bit of effort. My prediction for this time is silver at best.

Maldives were expected to play better given the fact that Bangladesh didn't field 7 of their regular U23 players and went for a 2nd choice keeper. But that shows the true strength of Bangladeshi football. The solo goal by Zahid Hossain of Bangladesh, after 3 months of injury was beyond the level of South Asian football. Interesting match wiil be the semifinal between Maldives and Afghanistan while Bangladesh is inshAllah expected to win against India.
