Dhaka, BANGLADESH – Maldives coach Urbanyi speaks in favour of match officials on the controversial penalty decisions and believed Maldives should have given a third one as well. Speaking exclusively to maldivesoccer.com, Urbanyi said the foul on Mukhthar should be a third one.
“The penalties were right decisions. We should have got one more penalty when Mukhthaar was brought down inside the penalty area”
Maldives first penalty was awarded when Nepali defender handled the ball, while he was trying to block Nafiu. The second penalty was awarded when Nepali goal keeper brought down Akram inside the penalty area.
Nepali coach asked the players to leave from the pitch when the second penalty was awarded. And Nepali Football Federation President, Thapa intervened and sent the players back on the pitch. The referee stopped the match during the period and was inside the center circle until the matter was resolved.
Maldives coach Urbanyi complained that the match should not have been stopped when the coach asked the players to leave.
“The match should not have been stopped. The referee should have asked to take the penalty if it was into an empty net even”
Urbanyi also expressed his satisfaction over the effort put the players in today’s win. Maldives won the game by a single goal scored by Umair from a penalty. Maldives got another penalty, but Umair’s second of the day was straight in to keeper’s gloves.
“The work rate of the players was superb today. They worked hard when they lost the possession. Nepal is very strong and it’s very difficult to beat them.
Urbanyi also highlighted that the senior players showed an example in today’s game.
“The senior players showed an example today. They worked hard and it also lifted the spirit of the other players.”
Nepal players and officials attacked match officials after the game and armed police escorted the officials to the dressing room.
Maldives will face Bangladesh in their final group game on Wednesday. The match may not be a decisive match if Bangladesh beat Bhutan today.
